The 2026 ANC January 8th Statement: renewed emphasis on local government ahead of municipal elections

In his 2026 January 8th Statement, President Cyril Ramaphosa reiterated the ANC’s political and policy priorities against the backdrop of growing public dissatisfaction and ahead of municipal elections later in 2026. This address also comes in the wake of the 2024 general elections, in which the ANC, for the first time since 1994, failed to secure an outright majority, necessitating the formation of a Government of National Unity. In this context, the 2026 January 8th Statement reflects a more explicit awareness by the ANC of its diminished electoral mandate and the governance failures that have contributed to the erosion of public trust. While framed in the language of renewal and recommitment, the statement implicitly acknowledges that persistent weaknesses in service delivery, municipal governance, and accountability have materially undermined the party’s credibility and electoral dominance.
