The official PRM party sweeps the municipal elections

The big winner of the municipal elections, held on February 18, 2024, was the official party. The PRM won 121 of the 158 mayoralties, equivalent to 76.6% and 40 more mayoralties than those won in the last 2020 elections. The parties that made up the opposition alliance Rescate RD obtained 23 mayoralties (14.6%). Within the opposition alliance, the PLD obtained the largest number of votes and obtained 16 mayoralties (49 less than those won in 2020), which makes it the main opposition party. The other parties of Rescate RD are the Fuerza del Pueblo, led by former president Leonel Fernández, which won 6 mayorships, and the PRD, which obtained 1 mayorship. An element to highlight is the high level of abstention, equivalent to 47.8% if Dominican voters abroad who do not participate in municipal elections are excluded. The level of abstention in the most populated municipalities exceeded 60%, as is the case of the National District, Santo Domingo, Santiago, San Cristóbal, among others. This level of abstention is the highest in the last 50 years and calls for concern as a sign of a crisis of political representation and of the disconnect between the parties' offerings and the expectations of citizens. Now attention focuses on the presidential elections to be held on May 19, 2024. The two main contenders will be Luis Abinader for the PRM, now the dominant party, and Abel Martínez for the PLD, now the main opposition party.
