The opposition achieves a solid victory in the municipal elections

The PRM and allies (opposition) have just obtained a solid victory in yesterday's extraordinary municipal elections. The results place them in an advantageous position to win national elections in May. The counting of the votes in the nearly 400 municipal entities of the country has not yet been completed because the traditional method of voting with paper ballots was used and because, in addition to mayors, council members are elected separately. That is why it is not clear the percentage of votes that each party or coalition obtained at the national level or the total number of municipalities that each won. However, around midnight last night, the PRM and allies had an irreversible advantage in 14 of the 20 largest municipalities in the country and in several of them the victory against the PLD was by a large margin. The PLD seems to have won only in three of them. The PRM said that its projections indicated that it had won in almost 70% of the main municipalities of each province. The PRM won in four of the five municipalities of Greater Santo Domingo and the PLD only in one. Among them, the PRM retained the National District (capital city) with a margin of almost 2 to 1. Other large municipalities in which the PRM won were La Vega, San Francisco de MacorĂs, San Cristobal, La Vega, Barahona and Puerto Plata. The PLD retained Santiago, the second largest city in the country. The results are somewhat surprising. The PRM and allies were expected to increase the number of municipalities under their control, but such a decisive victory was not projected.
