Following the conviction by the First Panel of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and seven other defendants accused of attempting a coup d’état, the opposition is pushing for consideration of a bill granting amnesty to all those accused. The government’s coalition argues that the Lower House should instead prioritize voting on a bill exempting individuals earning up to R$ 5,000 per month from paying income tax. The administration is banking on the measure to boost its popularity ratings. On Tuesday, the Lower House may vote on Provisional Measure No. 1,300/25, which changes the Social Electricity Tariff to exempt low-income households from electricity bills in cases of minimal consumption. If approved, it will move to the Senate. The measure expires on Wednesday.
