The government’s maneuver worked, and the Planalto Palace secured more time for Jorge Messias’s confirmation hearing for the Supreme Federal Court (STF). Initially, the president of Congress, Davi Alcolumbre (União–AP), had scheduled the hearing for December 10. But because President Lula did not formally submit the appointment notice for Messias, the hearing could not take place. Yesterday, the Senate’s Economic Affairs Committee approved a bill increasing taxes on fintechs and betting companies (PL 5,473/25). On Tuesday, December 2, the Lower House approved the provisional measure that requires the Special Environmental Licensing (LAE) regime to take effect immediately and prevents the process from being single-phase (MP 1,308/25).
