Year in and year out, large amounts of money are lost to the state from corruption or irregular spending. This is one of the main reasons the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) was established in 1996 in terms of the Special Investigating Units and Special Tribunal Act, (Act No 74 of 1996). The main objective of the Unit is to investigate “serious malpractices or maladministration in connection with the administration of State institutions, state assets and public money as well as any conduct which may seriously harm the interests of the public”.
