The South African government reiterates its stance of non-alignment committing to work with all countries for global peace and development as it concludes the 15th BRICS Summit
Against the backdrop of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, there has been increased interest in the 15th BRICS summit that was held in South Africa this week. The possibility of Russia’s President Putin attending had of course resulted in increased risk aversion towards South Africa before it was clarified that he would not be participating in person, as this would have resulted in a major diplomatic headache for South Africa.
This controversy is likely part of what led to President Cyril Ramaphosa to reiterate that South Africa’s commitment to a policy of non-alignment just days before the start of the Summit. He explained this as the resistance to align with “any one of the global powers or with influential blocs of nations”. He indicated that South Africa instead aspires to work with all countries in pursuit of global peace and development.
This was also highlighted during his closing address announcing the outcomes of the Summit as he indicated that the leaders expressed concern regarding ongoing conflicts across the globe, including their commitment to the achievement of peaceful resolutions through “dialogue and inclusive consultation”.
