As winter approaches, rising poverty is the most important concern among citizens and the most likely cause of social instability in the coming months. Various survey data for October find disturbing levels of hardship among majority of citizens.
President Erdogan may be sick, but it is comforting to see that he can still make pragmatic decisions. One of these is an instruction to the Cabinet to roll out a social spending package.
The details, as well as the timing and size of the package are still vague, but it will arguably become the biggest cash injection into the economy during the Covid period. The package could stop the bleeding of Erdogan and his AKP-MHP alliance in the polls, but will probably not suffice to turn the tide in their favor.
