Tight security and narrow domestic focus at SPIEF

On June 14 the St Petersburg International Forum (SPIEF) opened. The forum was instituted in 1998. The 2023 edition was the least impressive yet. Gone are the days when major world leaders attended. It was known as Russia's Davos. Putin addressed the forum. Mobile phones were blocked before his speech. Attendees had to use SPIEF's own WiFi. The Kremlin said this was a security measure. The Presidents of the UAE, Armenia and Algeria were the only world leaders to attend. There were guests from Cuba, the UAE, several African countries, Kyrgyzstan and Belarus. The theme for this year's SPIEF is future technology. But Russia is not at the cutting edge. Privately, Russian business executives complain that they are pressured by the government to attend and have to pay thousands of USD for a ticket. But there is little advantage to attending.
