Tokayev disempowers Nazarbayev even more

On January 28 the president became leader of the ruling party: Nur Otan. Nazarbayev has also been removed as the chair of the people's assembly. He retains the title "Leader of the Nation". However, that appears to be meaningless. Some members of Nur Otan are unhappy at the way January's unrest was handled.The mood has turned against Nazarbayev. Tokayev has implicitly criticized him on TV. A month ago that would have been unthinkable. However, he added that Nazarbayev has also achieved a lot for the country.The government now says 227 people were killed in the unrest and 19 of them were police. It is suspected that the true death toll is higher as many people are missing. Tokayev's order to shoot to kill without warning made the security forces trigger happy. 12,000 people have been arrested. On January 27 Parliament suggested removing privileges from Nazarbayev.
