On September 2 Ihor Kolomoisky was arrested on suspicion of fraud and money laundering. He will be held in pre-trial detention for two months. He allegedly illegally sent USD 14 million abroad to other countries. Ukraine is eager to prove that it is cracking down on corruption. There is disquiet in donor countries that money gifted to Ukraine is stolen. Kolomoisky is one of the Ukraine's richest people. The EU insists on tangible progress against corruption if Ukraine is going to join the EU. Kolomoisky is also being investigated for embezzlement and tax evasion. He partly owns oil companies. He used to own Private Bank. The US sanctioned him for corruption in 2011.
