Towards a new normal in politics?

The stunning defeat of Messrs. Erdogan and Bahceli in municipal elections upset the political equilibrium. All actors, led by Erdogan, are scrambling to reposition to deal with the new reality. It is possible for the quest for a new equilibrium to result in a more normal, democratic and less xenophobic Turkey, but there are still formidable barriers to permanent change.

The absolute minimum that needs to be done is to end the toxic AKP-MHP alliance, on which negotiations seem to be ongoing. The bad news is that it will probably take most of the summer months to see whether substantive progress can be made towards a more productive political atmosphere.
