UK sanctions Belarus as Russian oligarchs call for peace

On March 2 London said it was sanctioning four senior Belarusian Army officers and two military enterprises. The United Kingdom said this was because of Belarus's abetment of the invasion of Ukraine.Russian soldiers invaded Ukraine from Belarus. Ukraine claims that Belarusian soldiers have invaded, too, but Minsk denies this.The Belarusian Defense Minister is on the list of sanctioned people.JSC Integral has been sanctioned. It makes military semi-conductors. It repairs Russian military aircraft.Some in the UK have said that sanctions on Russia and Belarus have been too soft.On March 2 Mikhail Fridman gave a press conference in London saying that sanctions would not end the war. Fridman said the war is a tragedy but that he could not criticize Putin because it would be unsafe to do so. Oleg Deripaska has also appealed for peace.Fridman founded Alfa Bank which is Russia's largest private bank. He now lives in London and runs LetterOne which is an investment firm with interests in oil. Fridman complained that sanctions against him are unfair and he would fight them in the courts. The EU accused Fridman of being Putin's financier. Moscow has said that the UK's new satellite OneWeb must not be used for military purposes.
