UK to supply Ukraine with tanks for the first time

On January 14 the British Prime Minister made the announcement about Challenger 2 tanks. The rumor in the media is that 12 tanks will be sent. The UK is retiring 79 Challenger 2 tanks over the next few years. So it is possible that more such tanks will be sent. France recently Infantry Fighting Vehicles. The dispatch of British tanks is supposed to spur Germany to send Leopard 2 tanks. The Poles and Finns have Leopard 2s and are eager to donate them to the Ukrainians but cannot do so without German permission. EU countries such as Slovakia and Poland sent over 300 Soviet era tanks to Ukraine in 2022. Ukraine has been pleading for modern Western made tanks. There is a fear of Russia will launch a major spring offensive and Ukraine will not have enough heavy equipment to fend it off. As Russia is invading the Russians must move forward to win. Russia has raised the age for the spring 2023 draft to 30. The US announced on January 14 that it is training 90 Ukrainian soldiers in the use of Patriot air defense systems. Such training usually takes a year but the Ukrainians are on an accelerated course because the situation is exigent. A Patriot battery costs USD 1 billion. On January 18 the Ukraine Defense Contact Group will meet in Ramstein, Germany. This is a meeting for countries that donate defense equipment to Ukraine. They will coordinate on what items to donate.
