Ukraine claims it has made major advances around Kharkiv

On September 10 the Ukrainian offensives to the east of Kharkiv continued. Kharkiv is Ukraine's second biggest city and has been in Ukrainian hands throughout the war. The Ukrainians claim to have driven the Russians back almost to the border. Russia is shelling Kharkiv still and doing significant damage. There is no doubt that the Ukrainians have gained ground. The question is how much. Were it not for the death of Queen Elizabeth this battle would be garnering much more media attention. On September 10 the German Foreign Minister visited Kyiv. Ukraine is keen to demonstrate that it is putting Western arms to good use. Ukraine wants to regain land before the winter makes serious advances impossible. On September 9 Russia announced it was sending reinforcements to the Kharkiv sector. This underscores that what is happening is serious. Ukraine has retaken middling-sized towns that it lost 6 months ago. The Ukrainian Prime Minister was recently in Germany. He beseeched the German to provide arms. Germany had provided howitzers, rocket launcher and anti-aircraft missiles. The US recently vowed to deliver USD 3 billion worth of arms. The NATO Secretary-General said on September 9 that Russia was paying a very high price for its invasion in military and economic terms.
