On August 7 Ukraine said a guided bomb hit the center near Kupyansk, in northeast Ukraine, killing 2 people. Ukraine provided photographic evidence. Zelensky said it was a war crime. He said those who did this were beasts and terrorists. If Russia did hit the transfusion center it might have been accidental. Russia's munitions are fairly inaccurate. Russia has not responded to the accusation. It persistently denies all wrongdoing. On August 5 Russia said it had taken a village near Kupyansk, Ukraine. On August 4 Ukraine acknowledged that it is facing more and more attacks in north-east Ukraine. Russia does not seem to have the capability to take a large amount of ground. However, it is at least forcing a diversion of Ukrainian forces from Ukraine's counter-offensive in the Bakhmut and Zaporizhzhia areas. On August 8 Russia claimed to have destroyed another drone near Moscow. Drone attacks on Moscow are becoming a banality. On August 4 the Russian Defense Minister went on a morale-boosting visit to the troops in Ukraine. The Ukrainian counter-offensive began in early July 2023. It has gained 16 km maximum on two sectors of the front. The aim seems to be to reach the Sea of Azov. There is still about 160 km to go. At this rate of advance Ukraine will only gain another 30 km maximum before the weather makes a major offensive almost impossible in late November 2023. Even if the Ukrainians reach the coast they could well be pushed out of it. It is improbable that the Ukrainians will suddenly achieve a decision breakthrough. Russia's defenses are formidable. As one line is broken another is built.
