Ukraine claims Russia pushed back from Kharkiv

On May 11 Ukraine said that the Russian Army had been driven back from Ukraine's second city. Russia has lost the high ground near Kharkiv making it harder to shell the city. On May 10 the US House of Representatives voted for a USD 40 billion aid package for Ukraine. The US Senate has to vote on it. It is probable that the Senate will approve of it. Biden said that Ukraine will run out of money next week if it is not funded.The fighting is mostly in East Ukraine. Ukraine is finding it hard to retain is territory. It has not even attempted to relieve Mariupol. 1 000 fighters remain in the steelworks there. In nearby Zaporizhzhia the Ukrainians have built a similar underground fortress.Zelensky told his people not to anticipate victories all the time. His people are becoming over optimistic. Ukraine accused Russia of using cluster munitions. The US warned that Russia's focus on Donbas is temporary. If Russia succeeds there then they will attack elsewhere. Russia would like to take Odessa and thereby cut Ukraine off from the sea. Russia would then have a land connection to Moldova.The United States said that the Russian Army is not large enough to hold much Ukrainian territory even if Russia takes it. Washington said that Moscow might order a general mobilization and martial law. On May 10 the Ukrainian Foreign Minister visited Berlin. Germany promised more weapons.
