Ukraine claims to be advancing as diplomacy stalls

On June 29 Ukraine said it is moving forward in Donbas. Ukraine is attacking around Bakhmut: a city Russia took at enormous cost in 2023. Russia says it killed 2 Ukrainian generals and 50 officers in a missile strike on Kramatorsk on June 27. Ukraine says all those killed were civilians. Russia insists that the June 24 incident has not weakened its position in Ukraine. The Kremlin insists that Putin is extremely popular. He has undertaken some very rare walkabouts. A Vatican peace envoy arrived in Moscow on June 29. He was in Kyiv earlier in June 2023. Ukraine has asked the cardinal to secure the release of 16,000 Ukrainian children whom Kyiv said were kidnapped. Ukraine is asking NATO at its Vilnius Summit in July 2023 to give a clear indication that Ukraine will be allowed to join within a few years. Sweden is currently trying to join but Hungary and Turkey have still not agreed to this. The 31 members must agree unanimously to admit a new member.
