Ukraine claims to have sunk Russian warship

RUSSIA / FSU POLITICS - In Brief 28 Dec 2023 by Alex Teddy

On December 27 Kyiv said the landing ship Novocherkassk was sunk by Ukrainian jets in the Russian port of Feodosia. Russia stated that the ship was damaged but did not state there were any casualties. A Russian Telegram channel said there were 77 sailors aboard the ship at the time of the attack. It is reported by unofficial Russian media that dozens of sailors are missing. It was claimed that a UK-made Storm Shadow missile sank the vessel. Satellite images appear to confirm this. There are contradictory claims on Russian social media that the ship is afloat. The United Kingdom claims that Ukraine has sunk 20% of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. Russia has been very cautious about its naval vessels in the Black Sea since 2022. This means that Ukraine can export grain via the western half of the Black Sea with relative ease. Turkey has refused to let other Russian warships into the Black Sea. This makes it impossible to reinforce the Black Sea Fleet from Russia's three other fleets. On December 11 the UK said it will donate two mine hunter vessels to the Ukrainian Navy. It is unclear when they will arrive.
