Ukraine defends the east as Russia warns West against arms shipments

On December 16 Ukraine was successfully defending itself in the Donbas. Russia is trying to take Bakhmut. On December 15 Ukraine said there were 23 air strikes and 4 missile strikes against Kharkiv but minimal damage was done.  On December 15 Kherson was deprived of all electricity due to Russian attacks. Moscow warned the US that if it gives air defense systems to Ukraine these will be a legitimate target. Russia said providing surface-to-air missiles would be provocative. The US said it would not be deterred from providing security assistance to Ukraine. The US said it will train 500 more Ukrainian troops in Germany. Over 15,000 Ukrainian troops have been trained since April by NATO countries. Ukraine said that Russia might try to take Kyiv in January or February 2023. Russia is stationing more troops in Belarus.
