Ukraine grain deal extended

On November 17 the United Nations and Ukraine said the deal whereby Ukrainian food is exported through the Black Sea has been given a 120 day extension. Turkey is vital in this because the ships carrying the food will pass through the Bosphorous Strait which is a Turkish waterway flowing through Istanbul. Ukraine exports huge quantities of fertilizer, cooking oil, grain and wheat. The Black Sea Grain Initiative (as it is officially called) has been universally welcomed. The Grain Deal was signed in July 2022 and lasted for 4 months. 10 million tons of Ukrainian grain was blocked until it was signed. There was a deal exempting Russian fertilizer exports from sanctions. Russia complained that this agreement was reneged on. Russia has said it will not thwart the grain deal. Russia is diplomatically isolated and cannot afford to alienate more countries. Moscow tried to blame Ukraine global food and energy shortages but this did not seem to work.
