Ukraine launches its biggest ever incursion into Russia

On August 6 Ukraine sent hundreds of troops and at least 10 tanks across the border into the Kursk Region. There have been many incursions by Ukraine since 2022 but they have all been smaller scale and most lasted only a few hours. Ukraine attacked an airbase containing some of Russia's best planes. It is unclear if any were destroyed. Ukraine is coming within range of a major nuclear power station. On August 9 Russia declared this a federal emergency. Russia is rushing troops to the area. Russia says it can repel the Ukrainians but some commentators believe this might take a month. Russia might escalate the war somehow. In 2022 Putin warned that if Russia itself were attacked the might have to resort to weapons of mass destruction. However, this is not thought to be likely. Why is Ukraine doing this? Perhaps it considers it strategy of defending its eastern front is not working. Ukraine is being slowly pushed back. This major incursion has been quite successful partly because it was a surprise. Russia might be obliged to withdraw some forces from Ukraine to prevent the Ukrainians advancing deeper into Russia. Zelensky said that Ukraine needs to bring the war home to Russia. However, he might redouble Russian determination. The Kremlin's narrative that Russia is under attack starts to seem true.  Ukraine might seek to hold some Russian territory and then offer it in return for Russia withdrawing from Ukrainian territory.
