On October 5 the Kremlin claimed ''we are working on the assumption that the situation will stabilize'' after a few days of admitting that Russia was being pushed back. Russia is trying to deal with worries that the Ukrainians will make a major breakthrough. Ukraine gained ground in both the south and the east. Official Russian data states that over 210,000 of the 300,000 draftees have reported for duty. The siloviki have won the internal debate in the Kremlin. The decision has been made to double down, not back down. Russia has demonstrated determination. There has been a marked increase in state treason arrests. Draftees can be sent anywhere in the security landscape. FSB officers can also be drafted. Most of them are in excellent physical condition. Putin assured the public that there would be no rout. The very mention of that possibility is unsettling. Ukraine has retaken land that it lost in February. The pro-war Russian blogger Starshye Eddy said Russia faced ''an obvious operational crisis.'' A journalist for the pro-Kremlin Komsomolskaya Pravda said that the army has, ''no strength left... there will be no good news for some time.'' Another pro-war Russian blogger said officers complained about the lack of troops and ammunition. Russian defeats have been presented as strategic withdrawals by the Kremlin. Ukraine is closing in on Kherson, where 27,000 Russian troops are based. Russia has a major problem with supplies there due to damaged bridges and the Ukrainians' capturing supply hubs.
