Ukraine receives first US ammo for months

RUSSIA / FSU POLITICS - In Brief 25 Apr 2024 by Alex Teddy

On April 24 the US dispatched the first installment of the new aid package. The aid package passed the US Senate by an overwhelming majority, and Biden signed it. Within hours aid was on the way to Ukraine. It comes not a moment too soon for Ukraine. The US had identified the munitions and assets it intended to donate before Congress approved the aid package. The munitions and assets were stored in Poland ready for quick dispatch to Ukraine. In the initial shipments there are air defense missiles, HIMARS ammunitions, anti-tank weapons, armored vehicles and a few artillery shells. Ukraine requires tonnes of 155 mm artillery shells. The sheer bulk means that it will take weeks for all of this to arrive on the frontline. President Zelensky expressed Ukraine's immense gratitude to the US. Ukraine is under heavy pressure, and Russia is advancing. Zelensky was frank in saying if this aid package did not come then Ukraine would lose. The US stated that it sent ATACMS missiles to Ukraine in March 2024 as part of a USD 300 million assistance package. Biden was able to do this without congressional approval because the money involved came from savings in the defense budget. The ATACMS sent have a 165 km range. The US gave these with the caveat that they not be used in Russia, only in occupied Ukraine. Ukraine is still waiting for F16 from the Netherlands and Denmark. Its pilots have been trained on these jets for a year.
