Ukraine retreats from eastern city

On December 26 the most senior general in the Ukrainian Army, Valery Zaluzhni, announced that his forces had pulled out of Maryinka. He claimed that the city had been totally destroyed by Russian bombardment. Russia claims to have seized the whole city. The city has been under attack since the start of the war. The Ukrainians are not too worried about losing the city. It was not of great strategic or economic importance. Almost the entire civilian population has left already. Russia will gain nothing but territory by taking the city. The withdrawal shortens the Ukrainian defensive line. This a case of Ukraine's being pushed back and not a breakthrough. Ukraine is under serious pressure in other sectors such as Kupyanski. It is widely rumored that there is tension between Zaluzhni and Zelensky. Zelensky even acknowledged the rumors in December 2023 but said they are false.
