Ukraine seeks to bring Russia to the International Criminal Court

On April 21 Ukraine's prosecutor-general launched an investigation into Russian actions in Crimea, Luhansk and Donbass. Kyiv alleges that Russia has committed crimes against humanity in these regions. These are persecution, illegal conscription, show trials, shelling of civilians, kidnapping, inhumane treatment and sex crimes. Crimea is disputed by Ukraine and Russia. Ukraine even complains about the construction of the Crimean Bridge. Ukraine recognizes the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court (ICC) but Russia does not. Ukraine has referred the allegations about Russian conduct to the ICC. The ICC has not had to deal with such a large scale conflict in Europe since the 1990s. The ICC moves very slowly. However, an ICC ruling might bolster sanctions. Some countries are tiring of sanctions and would rather trade normally with Russia.
