Ukraine short of energy

Ukraine is struggling to produce sufficiently electricity. Coal stocks are very low. Nuclear power plants cannot work at full capacity owing to long overdue repairs.A severe winter resulted in power usage 6.5% higher than usual in February 2021. DTEK (an energy company) blamed market manipulation. Ukraine still depends on energy imports from Russia and Belarus.Companies did not stockpile coal from October 2020 when they were warned that nuclear energy reduction would be reduced in 2021.In January 2021 Ukraine bought more energy from Belarus than in the whole of 2020. 67% of Ukraine's imported energy came from Belarus in January 2021. Belarus' Astravets nuclear power station is finally fully functional. This partly explains Zelensky's surprisingly cordial relationship with Lukashenko.The EU is dead against Astravets. Ukraine can ill-afford to offend the EU.
