Ukraine to restrict religious groups linked to Russia

On December 1 Zelensky said his government would proscribe activities by religious organizations connected to Russia. A Kremlin-funded monastery in Kyiv was suspected of spying for Russia. Zelensky said that the security services believe that Russian subversion is carried on through religious bodies. Since the 17th century the Ukrainian Orthodox Church had been under Moscow's leadership. But in 2019 the Ukrainian Orthodox Church split with Moscow because of the Russian Orthodox Church's endorsement of the annexation of Crimea. The Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church is an outspoken advocate of Putin on many issues, including Ukraine.Â
