Ukraine withdrawing from Avdiivka

On February 17 the new head of the Ukrainian Army announced the pullout is because the city is almost enveloped. This is Russia's greatest victory since Bakhmut in May 2023. The difference is that Russia suffered horrendous casualties in Bakhmut but not in Avdiivka. General Syrsky said that the army would now defend better lines further west and had caused serious losses to the Russians. The commander of the Ukrainian Forces in Avdiivka said that the Russian had a 10 to 1 shell advantage so the withdrawal war right. Ukraine is finding it ever harder to hold ground because the USD 60 billion aid package is stalled in the US Congress. There is no indication that this will be approved soon. Even if it is approved, the aid package may well be less than USD 60 billion because Biden may be forced to compromise with Republicans who want more money for US border security instead of Ukraine. The US has sent USD 45 billion in military aid in the war so far. There is a chance that no further aid will ever be approved. Any new aid might come too late. It is possible that Ukraine's resistance will collapse in 2024. Russia is now closer to controlling the whole of Donetsk Region. This is one of the regions Russia annexed in September 2022. Ukraine continues drone attacks in western Russia. These mainly target oil and gas facilities. Zelensky is currently visiting European countries to plead for aid. On February 16 Ukraine signed security pacts with Germany and France. On February 17, Zelensky will be at the Munich Security Conference, where he will meet the Vice President of the US. The EU and its members pledged EUR 50 billion in military aid since 2022 but have only delivered EUR...
