Unemployment increased in the first quarter of 2016 according to the latest labor force survey results released by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA). Recording 26.7% for the period from January-March 2016, unemployment rose by 2.2 percentage points quarter on quarter (q/q) after it registered 24.5% for the last quarter of 2015. This increase was due to the number of unemployed persons increasing by 521,000, while employment decreased by 355,000 (after it had increased for seven consecutive quarters). Incidentally, this is also the highest recorded unemployment rate since Stats SA began its publication of the Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) in 2008. See Graph 1.
