Unemployment Rises in the Third Quarter of 2016

Statistics South Africa’s Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS), conducted during July to September 2016 (Q3:2016), shows that the unemployment rate increased to 27.1%, up from 26.6% for Q2:2016 and 26.7 for Q1:2016. See Graph 1. The slight quarter-on-quarter increase in the unemployment rate was caused by the number of unemployed people increasing by 239 000, which offset the increase of 288 000 in the number of employed people. According to StatsSA, today’s result is the highest recorded rate since 13 years ago.
