US accuses Russia of data breach

On January 6 Washington said that Moscow perpetrated the SolarWinds attack. The breach affected government and private sector security. Trump said it was China. However, other cabinet members blame Russia.The FBI, DNI, NSA and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency all blamed Russia. It was the most effective cyberattack in several years.The hack was based on Orion security software. This is made by SolarWinds. 18 000 organizations use SolarWinds.Under 10 US Government agencies were impacted by the hack. The hack took place some time in mid 2020 but was only publicised in December 2020.The aim of the hack - according to the US - was to garner intelligence. The agencies emphasized the need to take measure to prevent a recurrence.Biden will be inaugurated on January 20. That has been certified by Congress. The Biden Administration may well respond to the hack with sanctions or retaliation.
