US accuses Russia of gigantic cyberattack

On December 19 the United States said that Russia had carried out a cyberattack on several government agencies.On December 17 Microsoft said 40 major customers were attacked with malware. This enabled the attackers to gain access to systems. Electric power grids were among the systems exposed. 80% of those attacked are in the United States. Others are in Canada, Israel, the UAE and the EU.Mike Pompeo said that Russia committed this attack. It seems that the attack is ongoing. Moscow has disclaimed all responsibility. Private companies are urgently trying to bolster their defenses.Computer networks using software made by SolarWinds has been attacked. 18 000 customers of SolarWinds have been affected. The intrusions have been going on since March.Why now? The timing might be because Trump has a month left to go. Biden's inauguration is certain. He is known to be anti-Russian. This could be a warning against taking a tough stance. President Trump has not commented on the incident.
