US and Russian foreign ministers meet

On March 2 at the G20 summit in India, Antony Blinken and Sergei Lavrov met. The two had an informal discussion. US sources said that Blinken told Lavrov that the US will stand by Ukraine for as long as it takes. The Russian Foreign Ministry said that the two men had spoken only very briefly. Eighteen of the 20 countries agreed that there should be a statement calling for Russia's complete and unconditional withdrawal from Ukraine. China and Russia voted against this so the G20 did not end in a formal agreement about Ukraine as no form of words could be agreed. Lavrov blamed the US for this. He appealed to India and the Global South and accused Westerners of being rude. Russia also said it wants an investigation on the sabotage of the Nord Stream 2 Pipeline. India wanted the G20 to be about solving poverty and financing the Global South's move to renewable energy. Ukraine is an unwelcome distraction for India.
