US hosting Azerbaijan-Armenian talks

On May 1 the foreign ministers of the two former Soviet republics met in Washington. The US Secretary of State brokered the talks. The talks are due to last until May 5. Tensions have risen between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed Nagorno Karabakh Region. Azerbaijan blocked a road that leads to an Armenian-controlled area there. The US has asked that Azerbaijan reopen the road. US sources say that the US aims at normalization of relations between the two countries. However, that is probably overambitious. Conflict between the two goes back over a century. Russia has usually acted as the honest broker between the two. Armenia is a member of the CSTO alliance with Russia and is very economically reliant on Russia. Azerbaijan with its oil, gas and very brotherly relationship with Turkey has far more sway with Russia. Therefore, Armenia does not seem to see Russia as a good mediator of talks. The US wants to keep Azerbaijan happy because that keeps Turkey happy. The US also wants to see a strong Azerbaijan because it is an opponent of Iran.
