US likely to impose more sanctions on Nord Stream 2

On July 20 the House of Representatives passed a bill to put more sanctions on the companies involved in building a 1230 km gas pipeline from Russia to Germany. The pipeline is being completed under Danish territorial waters. The sanctions would be an amendment pursuant to the National Defense Authorization Act. This amendment to the act needs to be agreed to by the Senate and signed off by Trump before it takes effect.EU ships stopped working on the project because of US sanctions. The US is worried that Nord Stream 2 would give Moscow a strangehold over the EU. It would also mean gas does not go via Ukraine. Ukraine would miss out on transit fees. The Americans also want to sell more LNG to the EU.Russian ships are laying the pipeline. There is only 10% of it left.Nord Stream has cost close to USD 11 billion. It will be able to send 55 billion cubic meters of gas a year.
