US military drills in Moldova

On May 18 a US military aircraft landed in Moldova bringing troops from the US Air Force and the North Carolina National Guard. The Americans are there to take part in an exercise to practice tactics to respond to a civil emergency. The exercise is called "Shield of Peace". The US brought defense equipment and medical equipment that it is donating to Moldova. The US Embassy in Moldova was eager to tell the media about it. The US and the European Union are keen to encourage Moldova along a pro-Western path. Moldova is a candidate member of the EU. A considerable minority of Moldovans are still pro-Russian. There are Russian troops in the breakaway regions of Transnistria.
