US pulling out of Syria strengthens Russia

Trump announced that the US is withdrawing from Syria. This is largely welcome news in Russia since the Americans sometimes bombed Russia's Syrian allies. On the other hand the US help against ISIS was sometimes useful and Russia now has considerable responsibility, with Iran the other major backer of the Syrian government. US disengagement underscores the fact that Assad is going to stay in office. Israel presumably approved the US pull-out because Trump is keen to placate them. US troops are also going to pull out of Afghanistan. Russia has been enhancing her influence in Afghanistan by hosting peace talks and negotiating with all parties including the Taliban. Trump being so fickle means both these decisions could suddenly be reversed. Watch this space.
