US-Russia summit scheduled for January 10

The meeting will take place in Switzerland and will be to discuss Ukraine. Moscow demands a legally binding promise that Ukraine shall never be admitted to NATO. The US has said that this is a non-starter.NATO has suggested a conference with Russia on January 12. The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe will also be there. Russia has not yet agreed to the proposal. The Kremlin said on December 28 that it had finished a drill near the Ukrainian Border, and 10,000 troops are being withdrawn. Is this intended to be an encouraging signal to the US? However, NATO estimates that 122,000 Russian troops are still massed near the frontier. Reuters reported that Russia has sent more mercenaries to east Ukraine to assist pro-Russian insurgents.
