US sanctions on Russia for buying arms from North Korea

On May 16 the announcement was made in relation to two Russian men and three companies. The United States said these entities have purchased ballistic missiles, shells and other items for use in Ukraine. Almost all of North Korea's military hardware is of Soviet design, so it is compatible with Russian weaponry. Russia needed the munitions to make up for its own shortfall in production. North Korea allegedly receives food, oil and military expertise in return. As Russia has multiplied its military manufacturing output since 2022 its need for North Korean munitions is diminishing. The United States said that such trade with North Korea is against United Nations sanctions on North Korea that Russia voted for. The UN sanctions are to penalize North Korea for its weapons of mass destruction programs. Moscow and Pyongyang deny any weapons trade between them. In January 2024 Putin agreed to visit North Korea but no date for such a visit has been published.
