US worried over Russian Military in Arctic

On May 20 the Arctic Council met. The US expressed its dismay at Russian Military drills in the Arctic. Most members of the Arctic Council backed Washington. The US says the organization should emphasize ecology, safety at sea and the welfare of the autochthonous people.Russia wants to control the Northern Sea Route which is north of Russia. The US has said it wishes to defend the rule of law in the area: an implicit rebuke of the Russian position that it should set navigation rules in the zone. The other 6 members of the Arctic Council echoed Washington's call for the Arctic to be free from militarization and to remain under collective governance.Moscow's riposte is that it has legitimate concerns over a NATO buildup in Norway.
