USA sends ambassador to Belarus

On April 20 Trump nominated the first US ambassador to Belarus in 12 years. There has been a thaw in US-Belarussian relations. Julie Fisher is being sent to Minsk. Ms. Fisher is a career diplomat, not a political appointee. She has served in other former USSR countries and speaks fluent Russian. The US Senate is supposed to approve her posting but this this will probably be waived through because of the coronavirus. In 2008 the US withdrew its ambassador amid a row over a crackdown in Belarus. Trump is unconcerned with such matters. Over the past few years Belarus has rowed with Russia over energy and integration.Minsk is keen to demonstrate to Moscow that Belarus is not friendless. It is hard to see the US helping Belarus much since Belarus has little to offer. Belarus's joining NATO is unthinkable. The US is willing to sell oil to Belarus but Belarus has little money. The US lifted travel restrictions on Belarus on January 31, 2020.
