RUSSIA / FSU POLITICS - In Brief 10 Jul 2023 by Alex Teddy

On July 9 an election took place, and the result came on July 10. As expected, Shavkat Mirziyoyev was decisively re-elected. He will begin his third term. He took office in 2016. His term will last 7 years and he will be allowed to seek another one in 2030. Turnout was said by the election commission to be over 70%. They did almost no campaigning. It is suspected that they are Mirziyoyev supporters who ran just to provide dummy opposition. Real opponents of the president were not permitted to run. Mirziyoyev is not as violently oppressive as his predecessor. He released some political prisoners. He has been keen to attract Western investment. Mirziyoyev ended forced labor on cotton farms.
