Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan sign agreement

On January 27 the presidents of the two countries met and signed an agreement about their border. The President of Uzbekistan was in Kyrgyzstan for a state visit. Mirziyoyev said 30 years of disputes had been resolved. The two presidents both came to office within the last 7 years. They get on both better than their predecessors did. The agreement signed covers 20 areas. It includes a car assembly factory, a textile plant, and a rule that an ID card is enough for Kyrgyz and Uzbek citizens to cross the border. the border is dubbed the Border of Friendship. Analysts have said that the agreement really is epoch making. Some have blamed Russia for stoking ill feelings between the two nations in the past. Not everyone approves of the deal. 20 Kyrgyz oppositionists have been arrested due to protesting against the deal which gave a reservoir and a mountain to Uzbekistan. Kyrgyz politicians were pressured to vote for the deal.  Conversely, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan regularly shoot at each other across the border. Some years ago these happened on the Uzbek-Kyrgyz Border too. The new found spirit of compromise is remarkable.  There had been a hope that a Russian loan would finance a large hydroelectric dam in Kyrgyzstan. That would have meant water problems for Uzbekistan. But the dam project is now shelved as Russia cannot lend the money. Instead, in January 2023 Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan agreed to build a hydroelectric plant called Kambarat 1 in Uzbekistan.
