Uzbekistan and Russia agree on nuclear energy

On May 27 Putin visited Uzbekistan. Since 2022 he has made very few foreign trips. Russia agreed to spend USD 400 million on projects in the country. This will include building a nuclear power station in Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan is rich in uranium. The President of Uzbekistan and Putin signed several agreements. Uzbekistan wants to increase oil and gas purchases from Russia. Uzbekistan has plenty of oil and has itself. Russia used these to purchase these from Uzbekistan.  Putin told his counterpart that Russia is happy to receive Uzbek guest workers and they will be well treated. Since the Crocus City Hall terror attack earlier in 2024 there was a spike in prejudice against Central Asians in Russia. Some Uzbeks left Russia because of it. 5% of the Russian workforce is Central Asian. This figure will increase due to the low fertility rate in Russia, the draft and emigration. Uzbekistan has 32 million people making it by far the most populous country in Central Asia.  Uzbekistan is neutral on the Ukraine War. It is not a Russian ally. However, it has helped Russia evade sanctions by ordering sanctioned goods on Russia's behalf and selling them on. This is more from economic opportunism than from ideological commitment. Western countries have been keen to court Uzbekistan. Tashkent likes to keep its options open.
