Uzbekistan repairing airport for the Taliban

On December 18 it was reported that the former Soviet republic has sent engineers to Mazar e Sharif, Afghanistan. The airport has been closed for several months. Work on the airport is due finish in early 2002. The country has suffered a brain drain since the Taliban took over in August 2021.Uzbekistan has a special presidential envoy for Afghanistan. Relations between Uzbekistan and the Taliban are remarkably amicable considering the Taliban is banned in Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan is a 99% Muslim country that is rigidly secular. Islamic piety is frowned upon. Men with beards are seen as so suspicious that they are not even allowed on TV.The Taliban has vowed not to try to spread its ideology in Uzbekistan. So far they are honoring their pledge. They do not want to jeopardize the excellent cooperation they are receiving from the Uzbeks.Uzbekistan has been helping the UN High Commissioner for Refugees deliver aid to Afghanistan. 50% of Afghans are malnourished. 100 tons of aid has passed through Termez, Uzbekistan en route to Afghanistan.The Uzbeks are providing energy to their southern neighbor. The Taliban has said it cannot pay for it yet but shall do so when it is able to.
