What Does Industrial Production Say About the Speed of Recovery?

Brazil is nearing the end of the long and deep recession that began in the second quarter of 2014. In phases like this it is common for some sectors to start recovering while others are still contracting. This is one of the reasons to avoid making inferences about economic trends based on high-frequency movements in one sector or another. The strong growth of manufacturing in December is an example. Since the start of 2016, the 12-month rates of industrial output have been shrinking at a more moderate pace, and now are fluctuating near zero, suggesting that entry into positive territory is impending. However, the strong growth in December is far from an indication of a new trend, and instead will likely be followed by a correction in the opposite direction.
