Winter is coming, but what kind?
Last week’s main topic was the infighting in the high judiciary, which has blown over in a couple of days, without anyone grasping what it was all about. This week witnessed President Erdogan’s return to “wolf warrior” diplomacy, sniping at Israel relentlessly and managing to offend his hosts in his Berlin visit. The Foreign Affairs Committee of the Grand Assembly shelved Swedish accession to NATO indefinitely, which means no F-16s, and no hope for a thaw in relations with the EU.
At home, center-right opposition party IYIP began losing blood rapidly, demonstrating that the echoes of the opposition’s crushing defeat in May elections will rattle Turkish politics for some time to come. IYIP will probably contest municipal elections without alliances, which is bad news for CHP. Nonetheless, new CHP leader Ozgur Ozel will knock on IYIP leader Aksener’s door to explore possibilities of cooperation.
