On July 7 the Ukrainian President met his Turkish counterpart. Zelensky had been in the Czech Republic on July 6 to thank the Czech Republic for arming Ukraine. Putin's spokesman said that Russia shall follow the talks with a keen eye. He said that Russia really treasures its relationship with Turkey. He hinted that Putin might meet the Turkish president to talk about a way to make peace. Moscow appreciates Ankara's mediatory role. Some talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations took place in Turkey in 2022 after the war began. Ukraine's position remains that it shall not negotiate with Russia until all Russian soldiers leave Ukraine and that includes Crimea. But will Ukraine stick to that? Much depends on how the counter-offensive goes. If it fails, Western countries are discretely suggesting Ukraine may have to compromise. Turkey is the only NATO country not to impose any sanctions on Russia. Turkey receives over 1 million Russian tourists a year. It is the most popular foreign destination for Russians. Turkey is vital for the Black Sea Grain Initiative (BSGI). The BSGI is due to be extended later in July 2023 but Russia said it might not allow this unless sanctions on its banks are relaxed.Â
