On June 1 the Ukrainian President addressed the Shangri La Dialogue Conference. He appealed to China to help end the war and ensure nuclear safety. Because China is by far Russia's biggest trading partner it has unique access. Russia was not invited to this conference. Zelensky met the Presidents of Singapore and Indonesia. He met US Congressmen of both parties who were at the Shangri La Dialogue. He discussed further military assistance particularly air defense. Ukraine keeps asking for at least 7 more Patriot systems. He also asked them to tighten sanctions on Russia. Zelensky also met the US Defense Secretary. Zelensky also tried to build support for the Ukraine Peace Conference due in Switzerland on June 15. Russia has not been invited. Over 100 countries are due there. Zelensky said that China is trying to scupper the peace conference.  There is a proposal for talks between Ukraine and Russia in Saudi Arabia. Kyiv's position remains that talks will only begin after Russia withdraws from Ukraine including Crimea.  Singapore often claims to be neutral but it sanctioned Russia over the Ukraine War. It hosted talks between the US and North Korea. It is also a possible venue for talks between Ukraine and Russia. Putin said in May 2024 that Zelensky is hardly a valid interlocutor since his 5-year presidential term has expired. No presidential election has been held due to martial law owing to the war. Zelensky publicly doubted the value of talks with Russia, saying there have been over 200 rounds of talks between the two countries since 2014 and it has only ever led to more war.
